Asclepias tuberosa is a member of the milkweed family. It is commonly called butterfly weed because the bright orange color of the flower along with the fact that it is an excellent producer of nectar are very attractive to many species of butterfly. Since it is a milkweed it is also a host plant for monarchs and other milkweed butterflies. I took this photo in August at Crex Meadows. Typically the butterfly weed in this area has finished blooming before August but because of the early summer this year things have been different.

It really is a lovely looking plant. And a great shot of it too. Are milkweed butterflies orange too? Thank you for sharing your work on Mandarin Orange Monday :)
