Birdfoot Violet

Birdfoot violet is a native perennial here in Minnesota. It provides quite a bit of sustenance to many different species of insects. The flower is very popular with many small butterflies and skippers. It is also one of the host plants for the larva of several different species of fritillary. Even ants are attracted to the sugary coating that covers the seeds. In return for the food the butterflies and bees help to pollinate the flowers and the ants help to disperse the seeds.
