'Tis the season

Well Christmas is almost here and if you are like me you are prolly in a scramble to pick up those last minute gifts. Here are a couple of gift ideas that I thought that I would share with you.
1) How about a California condor chick as a stocking stuffer? Ok, so they don't actually get a real condor, but that is prolly a good thing. After all condors are kind of high maintenance. They eat things that are dead and rotting, use vomit as a defense mechanism and defecate on their feet to reduce their body temperature. But you can adopt a California condor chick for your loved ones through the Ventana Wildlife Society. Adopting a chick gets them an adoption certificate, e-mail updates of chicks in the wild, and if you spend $100 or more entry into a drawing to win a day Ventana Wildlife Society biologists observing Big Sur condors in the wild. Most importantly both you and the person receiving the gift will get the knowledge that you are helping an endangered species to survive in the wild.
How could anyone say no to one of these little guys. If you are looking for gifts for the more material person on your list Ventana Wildlife Society also has some merchandise that you can purchase that will help fund their worth wild programs. You can check out their CafePress site here.

2) For those people with a larger stocking how about a red-tailed hawk, great-horned owl, bald eagle or other raptor. The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota has several has several gift packages ranging from $50 on up. Gift packages include a photo of your bird, a certificate, updates, visits to the raptor center and some Raptor Center merchandise. Check out the site for more details. Money from the packages go to help fund the work that the Raptor Center does as well as help offset the costs of caring for the large number of educational birds which can not be released back to the wild.

Some other places to get some last minute gifts, although you may have a problem getting things in before Christmas, are the National Eagle Center and Iowa Ornithologists' Union nature store.
Happy shopping
